Guerrilla Games has announced that Horizon Forbidden West has now sold over 8.4 million copies worldwide, with the total sales of the franchise reaching 32.7 million overall.
The details:
- Jan-Bart van Beek, the studio's director, confirmed in a new blog post that the Horizon franchise had sold 32.7 million units worldwide as of April 16, 2023. The figure represents traditional sales of the game and excludes the "millions more" who have played Forbidden West or Zero Dawn through other means, such as PlayStation Plus and the Play at Home program, which ran during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- van Beek revealed that Forbidden West, which was released on both the PlayStation 4 and 5 in February 2022 and recently received the PS5 exclusive Burning Shores expansion, accounted for 8.4 million of the 32.7 million total. It has yet to receive a PC port, but we can expect one in the coming years, complete with DLC, similar to Zero Dawn.
- Despite the achievement, Forbidden West still needs to sell over 11 million copies to catch up to Zero Dawn's 20 million unit sales, which could happen in the next few years as more fans get their hands on a PS5 or a PC version. Guerrilla's continued work on new Horizon projects, such as a third mainline game, a multiplayer title, and a live-action Netflix show, could also boost sales.
More Guerrilla/PlayStation news:
- The long-rumored PlayStation showcase will reportedly take place in the week of May 25, with Konami expected to appear to announce a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 as well as a new Castlevania.
- Guerrilla may have plans to develop the Decima Engine for use in projects outside of the studio, with the studio's former co-director stepping down to become a technical director focused on the engine. The engine could be made available to other PlayStation studios as well as third-party developers such as Kojima Productions.
- Horizon Forbidden West’s latest expansion, Burning Shores, has been the victim of review bombing on Metacritic due to the inclusion of an optional same-sex kissing scene. The site has announced it will be introducing stricter moderation following the "abusive and disrespectful" reviews.
