Following the release of a creepy trailer last week, Nintendo confirmed that a new installment in the Famicom Detective Club series is on its way after 35 years.

The details:

  • Nintendo recently released a teaser trailer titled "Emio" or "Smiling Man" in Japanese, which depicted a masked figure with a creepy smile drawn on a paper bag. A link to an empty page for the game on Nintendo's website and a "WhereisEmio?" hashtag were the only details provided about the project.

  • The company has now revealed "Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club," which will be released on August 29 for the Nintendo Switch. This is the first original entry in the adventure franchise since 1989. Yoshio Sakamoto, the original series designer, has also confirmed his involvement as the game's producer after supervising remakes of past entries in 2021.

  • The game revolves around the murder of a student, who was left with a paper bag with a smiling face drawn on it, which is very similar to clues from previous unsolved murder cases. Players will take on the role of a junior private investigator as they solve the mystery of Emio, a "killer of urban legend who is said to grant his victims 'a smile that will last forever.'"

  • Famicom Detective Club launched on the original Famicom Disk System with The Missing Heir and was soon followed by a prequel story, The Girl Who Stands Behind. The latter was remade for the Super Famicom (SNES), with both games receiving full remakes for the Switch in 2021, marking the first time the series was officially localized for an English audience.
