Avalanche Studios has announced that it will close two locations and lay off approximately 9% of its workforce to "ensure a stable and sustainable future for the company."

The details:

  • The developer confirmed on its website that its studios in New York and Montreal will be closing, resulting in approximately 50 employees losing their jobs. “This is an exceptionally difficult decision, but we believe it’s necessary to ensure a stable and sustainable future for the company,” Avalanche said in a statement. “Our focus is now on supporting all Avalanchers through this challenging time. We’re grateful for the invaluable contributions of those leaving and remain committed to creating incredible gaming experiences for our players.”

  • In 2011, Avalanche opened its first North American studio in New York. Its Montreal studio was established less than a year ago, in October 2023, after the company acquired Monster Closet Games, which consisted of many veteran AAA developers.

  • Following the closures, the company now has studios in Liverpool, Malmo, and Stockholm. It is currently working on Contraband, an open-world co-op Xbox exclusive that reportedly focuses on vehicular gameplay.
