Hideo Kojima reveals he was never told about the Wachowskis' Matrix game proposal

Hideo Kojima has responded to reports that the Wachowskis approached Konami to request him for a Matrix video game following the release of the classic film, stating that he was never informed of the conversation and only learned about it through social media 26 years later.

The details:

  • Earlier this week, Christopher Bergstresser, former Konami vice president of licensing, revealed that the Wachowskis personally asked Kojima to develop the game during a meeting at Konami headquarters, only to have company executive Kazumi Kitaue immediately reject the proposal. The Matrix license ultimately went to Shiny Entertainment, which developed Enter the Matrix and its follow-up, The Path of Neo.
  • In a post on X, Kojima expressed surprise at discovering the Wachowskis had asked Konami for the legendary director to create a game based on the film. "In all these 26 years, no one ever told me such a conversation had taken place,” he wrote. He explained that while he met the Wachowskis three times during their Japan promotional tour, he arrived at Konami headquarters after their meeting with Kitaue had already concluded.
  • According to Kojima's account, as vice president of KCE Japan at the time, he had joined the Wachowskis for approximately an hour of conversation without an interpreter after Kitaue's meeting ended. He also attended a Famitsu interview with them in the morning alongside concept artist Geoff Darrow, as well as the Japanese premiere of The Matrix and its afterparty, but claims no mention of the proposal was made during any of these interactions.
  • Despite being occupied with the development of Metal Gear Solid 2, Kojima suggested he could have found a way to work on the project if he had known about the request. "At that time, I was already extremely busy with Metal Gear Solid 2 and probably couldn't have accepted the offer right away," Kojima wrote. "But if someone had told me, maybe there could've been a way to make it work."
