Nightdive Studios CEO teases a remaster of GameCube horror classic Eternal Darkness
Nintendo

Nightdive Studios co-founder and CEO Stephen Kick appears to be strongly hinting that the remaster specialist has its sights set on Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, the beloved 2002 GameCube horror game that fans have been clamouring to see return for years.

The details:

  • When a fan on X asked whether we'd ever see Eternal Darkness again, Kick quote-tweeted them and replied: "Eternal Darkness is one of my all-time favorites and it deserves the treatment I know Nightdive Studios is capable of." He then added "keep your eye on our Deep Dives" with a link to Nightdive's YouTube channel, strongly implying a formal announcement is coming.
  • Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem was developed by Silicon Knights and published by Nintendo in 2002 as a GameCube exclusive. It was known for its innovative 'sanity effects' — a system that increasingly broke the fourth wall as the player's sanity meter dropped, from subtle camera tilts and background noises through to the game pretending to delete your save file or change the TV channel.
  • Despite its cult status, the game reportedly sold fewer than 500,000 copies in its lifetime, meaning a large portion of players never had the chance to experience it. There has been no re-release or remaster in the 24 years since its original launch.
  • Nightdive, now owned by Atari following a 2023 acquisition, has an extensive track record of bringing classic games back to life, having remastered titles including System Shock, the Turok series, Shadow Man, Star Wars: Dark Forces, Quake, and most recently SiN: Reloaded, which is due on September 24.
