Hideo Kojima has voiced his opinion on the current gaming industry, stating that after watching the recent Summer Game Fest, he believes that many modern games are too similar to each other, with few things to tell them apart.

The details:

  • In a recent interview with SSENSE, writer Kevin Nguyen notes that Kojima "sounds disappointed about the state of his industry." The legendary game director explained that after watching the latest Summer Game Fest, organized by good friend Geoff Keighley, he felt like every trailer involved "fighting an alien monster or a medieval monster." “Even the visuals and the systems are pretty much the same,” Kojima said, “and a lot of people enjoy this, I understand, but it is important to put something really new in there for the industry.”
  • Kojima went on to share that he now plays very few AAA budget games, stating that he believes that publishers are releasing titles that are “safe and tremendously boring,” while indie games are more interesting and experimental.
  • On the topic of big-budget games, Nguyen asked Kojima if he would play Konami's upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, MGS Delta. The director laughed and confirmed that he has no intentions of playing the game, which is unsurprising given the controversial fallout between the two parties back in 2015.
