The Nintendo Switch is now the best-selling console of all time in Japan
Following the release of Nintendo's most recent financial results, the Switch has become the all-time best-selling console in Japan, with over 33 million units sold.
The details:
According to the company's most recent update (via Bloomberg), the Switch has now sold more than 33.34 million units in Japan since its release in 2017, surpassing the Nintendo DS family of consoles, which has 32.98 million.
In order to become the best-selling console in the world, the Switch must sell 16 million more units, surpassing the DS and PlayStation 2, which have sold 154 million and 155 million units, respectively. At the current rate of sales, Nintendo expects to sell 141.12 million systems by March 2024.
The Switch is now nearing the end of its lifecycle after reviving public interest in Nintendo games following the Wii U's down years. Despite Nintendo's refusal to comment on the rumors, it has been claimed that the company is preparing to announce and possibly release a successor to the console later this year. Officially, the company has stated that the Switch remains its "main business" heading into 2024.
