The original Nintendo Switch has officially overtaken the Nintendo DS to become the company’s best-selling console of all time, following a strong holiday sales period backed by continued demand for both the console and its games.

The details:

  • Nintendo confirmed the milestone in its latest financial report, ending in December 2025, revealing that the original Switch has now sold 155.37 million units worldwide, surpassing the DS’s 154.02 million unit sales. Despite its successor, the Switch 2, launching in March of last year, Nintendo revealed that 1.36 million units of the original Switch were sold between the end of March 2025 and December 2025.
  • The system is now the second best-selling console of all time, with its sales now sitting just below Sony’s PlayStation 2, which remains the industry’s best-selling console at an estimated 160 million units sold. Nintendo currently expects to move a further 750,000 Switch units before the end of its fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2025. While it will still come up short of surpassing the PS2, Switch consoles will likely continue to sell relatively well given that it is not only cheaper than its follow-up, but its games can also be used on the newer platform.
  • On the software side, Nintendo reports that over 1.5 billion Switch games have now been sold. First-party titles continue to dominate the platform’s charts, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sitting at around 70 million units sold, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons at approximately 49 million and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at roughly 37 million.
