Final Fantasy series producer Naoki Yoshida has suggested that a port of FF16 could be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, as it remains the only major console platform without the game.
The details:
- In a recent livestream covering upcoming FF14 updates (via ResetEra), Yoshida and other notable Square Enix staff discussed the recent Xbox Series X/S port of FF16. The producer commented that it was “just Nintendo left,” to which creative director Kazutoyo Maehiro replied that he would “do [his] best.”
- While not an official confirmation that it is coming to the new platform, it would fall in line with Square Enix’s current multi-platform strategy. Originally launching its latest Final Fantasy titles as timed PS5 exclusives, FF16 has now made its way to Xbox, and the company has confirmed that FF7 Remake will be arriving on both Xbox and the Switch 2 in the near future.
- The company’s decision to move away from exclusives comes after its latest releases failed to meet sales expectations. This included FF16 and the second part of the FF7 Remake trilogy, Rebirth, both of which were met with critical acclaim. Despite the change in direction, it has been reported that FF16 is also performing poorly on Xbox, although Square Enix has yet to provide any official sales data.
