A modder has confirmed that their multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 has been cancelled after Sony Interactive Entertainment requested it not be released — despite the company having previously cancelled its own official multiplayer project for the same game.

The details:

  • The mod was created by Speclizer and had been in active development since January 2026, with regular progress updates shared publicly throughout the year. It was on track to launch this month before Sony intervened.
  • The mod added full team-based multiplayer matches pitting the Seraphite and WLF factions against each other, with matchmaking, pre-match loadouts, and maps built from locations in the campaign. It was described as more akin to Factions from the original The Last of Us than anything more ambitious.
  • Sony sent a request for the mod not to be released. No DMCA takedown or legal threat has been publicly disclosed, but Speclizer confirmed the project is dead. He described the situation as "extremely sad" and thanked fans for their support over the past year.
  • The cancellation comes after Naughty Dog shut down its own standalone The Last of Us multiplayer game in late 2023, citing the scope of what it had become. That project had been in development for several years and was once positioned as a major release. There is currently no multiplayer game in the series in development.
  • Sony has not commented publicly on the decision.
