Blizzard has announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, targeting a Spring 2029 release — and is taking the series in a direction that flips its core premise entirely.
The game takes place in a version of Sanctuary that has already fallen to Diablo — not a world the player is racing to save, but one where the heroes are gone and Diablo has won. Designer Joe Shely described it: "For the first time, you won't be fighting to stop Diablo from taking Sanctuary; you'll enter a world where he already has, with no towns and safe places waiting to protect you."
Production director Tiffany Wat added that the premise changes the fundamentals of how the game plays: "That changes everything: how you survive, what powers you're willing to claim, and what you're willing to sacrifice." The core question driving the game is "what must you become when the world has already fallen?"
A dedicated BlizzCon panel is scheduled this weekend to reveal further details about the game, including presumably class and gameplay information.
Separately, Blizzard confirmed that Diablo 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15.
BlizzCon also brought news that a Diablo Netflix series is in development, with Blizzard saying it is in discussions to launch similar projects for its other franchises.
