Blizzard has revealed a brand new StarCraft game at BlizzCon 2026 β€” an open-world shooter that marks a complete genre departure from the franchise's real-time strategy roots, with a target release of Spring 2030.

The details:

  • The new game is simply titled StarCraft and was announced during the BlizzCon opening ceremony. It is led by Dan Hay, formerly a lead producer on the Far Cry series at Ubisoft, suggesting an open-world action game in a similar vein.
  • A cinematic trailer titled "Announce Cinematic: Dominion" was shown, following a Marine named Holt training for the Dominion military before a Zerg attack. The trailer focuses heavily on humanity and the United Earth Directorate preparing for conflict with the Zerg.
  • No gameplay was shown, and Blizzard has not confirmed platforms, a protagonist, multiplayer plans, or monetization details. The Spring 2030 window is the only concrete information provided.
  • This is Blizzard's third attempt to take StarCraft beyond real-time strategy. StarCraft: Ghost, a third-person action stealth game, was cancelled in 2014 after years of on-and-off development. Project Ares, another undisclosed StarCraft spin-off, was cancelled internally in 2019.
  • The original StarCraft 2 ended its story content in 2019, and the competitive scene has significantly contracted since its peak, leaving a sizable gap in the franchise that Blizzard is now looking to fill with a new direction.
