Nintendo has released new gameplay footage and details for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond ahead of its release later this year, revealing psychic abilities, a new suit, and more.

The details:

  • The new footage was shown during the latest Switch-focused Direct, giving fans another look at Samus' next adventure on the overgrown planet of Viewros, where she is attempting to escape after being mysteriously transported there.

  • The trailer gives a more detailed look at the game's first-person combat mechanics, with Samus' signature Arm Cannon locking on to and defeating a variety of monsters including flying insects, deadly tentacles, and strange four-legged creatures. From the gameplay, we can see that players will be able to dash backwards to avoid attacks while also gaining some air.

  • Prime 4 also introduces "Psychic Abilities," which allow Samus to use her mind to solve puzzles using unique mechanisms and control the direction of her blaster shots, allowing multiple enemies to be hit at the same time. It is unclear why the bounty hunter is able to use the abilities, but the trailer implies that a god-like being may be involved.

  • The rest of the trailer shows Samus using her iconic Morph Ball form to access smaller areas and battling a boss monster named "Carvex" in an arena-style setup, along with a glimpse of an unnamed sleek new red, grey, and purple suit.

  • Prime 4 is still scheduled to arrive on the original Switch this year, though Nintendo has yet to provide an exact release date.
