Now-independent Double Fine has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new game jam, with a $100 million stretch goal that would unlock development of Brütal Legend 2. The studio split from Xbox earlier this year following mass layoffs and studio closures, and is using crowdfunding to keep operations running while it seeks backing for larger projects.

The details:

  • The campaign has a primary goal of $400,000, of which Double Fine had raised $284,000 (around 71%) at the time of writing. The studio previously used Kickstarter to fund Broken Age, making this a return to a familiar model.
  • The $100 million Brütal Legend 2 stretch goal is, by the studio's own admission, almost certainly a joke given current game development budgets. Double Fine reiterated on X that it is still working on bigger games and that the game jam campaign is a stopgap while it pursues funding for those larger projects.
  • Brütal Legend, released in 2009, starred Jack Black as Eddie Riggs, a roadie transported to a fantasy world modelled on heavy metal album art. The game sold 1.4 million copies by 2011. A sequel has been discussed by creator Tim Schafer on and off for years but has never moved into production.
