Riot Games has been forced to restrict access to several of its most popular titles for players under 18 in Brazil following the implementation of a new national law targeting games with loot box mechanics.

The details:

  • The restriction affects League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, Wild Rift, 2XKO, and Legends of Runeterra, with all players under 18 now completely blocked from accessing these games in Brazil. VALORANT is the only major Riot title exempt from the ban, instead requiring parental approval for players aged 12-17.
  • The changes stem from Brazil's new "ECA Digital" law, officially known as the "Statute of Children and Adolescents," which specifically targets games featuring gacha and loot box systems that lawmakers consider predatory towards minors. The law requires age verification for affected games, with players needing to provide ID to prove that they are over 18.
  • In a statement, Riot Games confirmed the restrictions and indicated that they are working to lower the age ratings of affected games, with changes expected by 2027. Until then, Brazilian players under 18 will be unable to access these titles.
  • The ban raises significant concerns for Brazil's esports ecosystem, particularly the CBLOL (Brazilian League of Legends Championship). By preventing younger players from developing their skills, the law effectively cuts off the talent pipeline that has historically fed Brazil's competitive scene, potentially impacting the region's long-term competitiveness.
