Nintendo is releasing a revised Switch 2 model for Europe with an officially user-replaceable battery in order to comply with upcoming EU rules on easily swappable batteries from February 18, 2027.

The details:

  • On its European site, Nintendo says it’s “implementing measures to comply” with the EU Battery Regulation, stating that from 18 February 2027, certain products sold in the EU must have batteries that “can be easily replaced by end users" and that it is preparing compliant versions of current hardware.
  • For devices whose model numbers currently start with “BEE” (which covers Switch 2 and its controllers), the compliant versions will have new model numbers plus an additional “OSM” code on the box so retailers and regulators can distinguish them from the existing, non‑compliant units.
  • It’s said that the EU‑specific revision will include a Switch 2 with a more easily removable battery. Nintendo is also considering revised Joy‑Con 2 controllers with similarly swappable batteries, though Nintendo has not yet formally detailed the controller changes.
  • For now, the replaceable‑battery Switch 2 is only confirmed for the EU market; Nintendo says it may consider offering the same design in other regions if “consumer awareness of the right to repair” increases and similar regulations appear elsewhere.
