PlayerUnknown announces layoffs at his studio as development on early-access title comes to an end

PUBG creator Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene is halting development of his Early Access survival game. Prologue: Go Wayback!, leading to layoffs as the studio downsizes.

The details:

  • In an update posted to X, Greene, the founder of PlayerUnknown Productions, told players he has “reached the limits of how far I can continue to fund this journey" and announced a “hard decision to restructure the studio,” keeping a smaller team focused on its Melba terrain-generation tech while stopping further development of Prologue.
  • Prologue launched into Early Access on Steam and Epic last November as a hardcore single-player survival roguelike built around maps generated through machine learning technology. However, with the step back from development, only one more update will be coming to the project for now, which will add new items, paths, and trails and remove its early access label.
  • Greene says the studio is looking for ways to offer refunds to those who have purchased the early-access version, with more details coming soon. Prologue will also be released for free, allowing all players to try out the unfinished game.
