Obsidian says its prioritizing own IP over Fallout: New Vegas 2, studio finds "joy" in original creations

Obsidian Entertainment has suggested that it has no plans to pursue Fallout: New Vegas 2 in the near future, with the studio instead preferring to focus entirely on its own franchises.

The details:

  • Speaking on The Game Business Show, Obsidian's VP of operations Marcus Morgan acknowledged that while fans have constantly requested Bethesda and parent company Microsoft to allow the studio to create a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas, the developer may not even take the opportunity, instead focusing on its own IPs. "I know everyone on the internet, on every game we ever announce, will constantly [ask], 'When's the next New Vegas?' or 'When's the next whatever?' … But this year, in addition to it being like you know, a celebration of shipping three games, all three of those games are IP that we've created, that are Obsidian IP," he explained.
  • Morgan noted that although it was previously known for working with IPs owned by its partners, having created Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2, and New Vegas, it now finds “joy” in creating its own original games.
  • The executive pointed out that there are still parts of New Vegas’ DNA found in its games, namely The Outer Worlds 2, but explained that Obsidian no longer worries “as much about breath as it does about depth."
  • Morgan’s interview comes shortly after Bethesda announced that it would be releasing a 15th anniversary edition of New Vegas next year. The bundle will include the current Ultimate Edition of the game, a statue of Victor, evaluation cards used by Doc Mitchell in the game’s introduction, pins, patches, and classic “big box” packaging. The announcement met with mixed responses from fans who had hoped a remaster or remake was on the way similar to that of Oblivion Remastered, noting that New Vegas requires several fan patches to run correctly on PC.
