Tim Cain, one of the original developers behind the Fallout series, has announced that he is returning to The Outer Worlds studio Obsidian Entertainment as a full-time employee to work on an unannounced project.

The details:

  • In a new YouTube video uploaded to his personal channel, Cain confirmed that he is no longer a contractor and has joined the Avowed developer “as a full-time employee and in person.” He added that he is working on a new project, and he believes fans will not be able to guess what the game itself will be. “I’m back at Obsidian,” he said. “I’m there as a full-time employee and in person, so not remote, and I’m not a contractor anymore. This means that I’m not working at other places, although there’s at least one game that I worked on [elsewhere] that I know is going to ship.”
  • Cain, who served as a producer and programming lead on the original Fallout and a designer on its follow-up at Interplay, joined Obsidian in 2011, going on to work on Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds. He would later leave the developer as a full-time employee in 2020, becoming “semi-retired” and becoming a remote contractor for the studio.
  • Despite the designer's comments, fans have already started speculating on what the project might be. While Obsidian has stated that it intends to focus on new IPs despite Fallout: New Vegas being frequently mentioned by fans, some believe Cain's project could be related to the remake of Fallout 3 that was reportedly in the works.
