Sony confirmed on Friday that the LittleBigPlanet 3 servers have been shut down indefinitely due to technical issues.

The details:

  • Sony confirmed in a post on X that the title's services would be discontinued, with players no longer able to access user-generated content or other in-game functions after they were originally suspended in January. “Due to ongoing technical issues which resulted in the LittleBigPlanet 3 servers for PS4 being taken offline temporarily in January 2024, the decision has been made to keep the servers offline indefinitely,” Sony wrote. “All online services including access to other players’ creations for LittleBigPlanet 3 are no longer available.”

  • Although user-generated content stored locally on a PS4 remains available, the sudden decision to shut down the servers means that over a decade's worth of levels created by players may be lost forever. Sony shut down the servers for the PS3 versions of LittleBigPlanet 1, 2, and 3 in 2021, making the PS4 version of 3 the only way to play the millions of levels created in previous entries.

  • It's unclear whether a fourth game in the series will ever be released, as its creator, Media Molecule, has since moved on and developed Dreams for the PS4. Although it is working on a new project, the studio announced layoffs last year, with PC and PS5 ports of Dreams being canceled.
