Journey and Sky developer thatgamecompany launches publishing label thatgamepublisher
thatgamepublisher

thatgamecompany, the studio behind Journey and Sky: Children of the Light, has established a publishing arm called thatgamepublisher. The label will fund and support games that "move people through play," with the studio drawing on two decades of experience making emotionally driven games to back projects from developers at any stage.

The details:

  • As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, thatgamepublisher is a full-service publishing operation, offering funding, production planning, platform and launch strategy, marketing, community management, and long-term intellectual property development. The label is open to solo developers through to larger teams with AA-level budgets, and will consider projects at any stage including early prototypes.
  • The initiative is led by thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen and VP of growth and corporate development SJ Xue. Funding comes from profits generated by Sky: Children of the Light, the studio's free-to-play adventure game available on PS4, Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.
  • thatgamepublisher has already signed "a couple" of projects, though none were announced alongside the label's launch. There are no hard restrictions on genre or platform.
  • The move positions thatgamecompany as both a developer and a champion of a specific style of game. The studio's own titles have built a reputation for reaching audiences well beyond traditional gaming demographics, and the publisher appears aimed at replicating that model for other teams.
