Xbox is launching a disc-to-digital feature that lets you claim digital licences from physical game discs, Microsoft announces

The details:

• The feature works by inserting a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into your console and launching the game, which then claims a digital entitlement to that title on your account. The physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has and is not consumed or altered in any way.
• Once a digital entitlement is claimed, players unlock the associated benefits of digital ownership, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming access where supported, meaning those games can then be played on PC and mobile without needing the disc.
• Xbox says "thousands" of Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games will be supported at launch, with more added over time. Not every title will be available from day one.
• Xbox framed the announcement as a game preservation step, stating that "preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever" as physical media and distribution methods evolve. Beta testing opens to Xbox Insiders on August 31.
