Sony confirms physical disc production for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028, citing a significant shift in how players prefer to access games. The announcement was made today on the PlayStation Blog, and arrived alongside a separate update confirming the closure of PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita.

The details:

  • From January 2028 onward, all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be available through the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only
  • Games that have already released or will release in physical disc format before January 2028 are unaffected by the change
  • Sony cited consumer trends in its reasoning, stating that "the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs"
  • The announcement was paired with news that PlayStation Store on PS3 will begin closing in select markets including Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua from August 2026, with Latin American and Middle Eastern countries to follow later in the year; global closures for PS3 and PS Vita stores are set for July 2027
  • Sony said the dual announcement reflects its broader strategy to "align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today"
