N64 classic Goldeneye 007 launches on Game Pass on January 27

Rare's iconic FPS Goldeneye 007 will be re-released on the Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on January 27.

The details:

• Goldeneye 007, initially released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64 and based on the 1995 James Bond movie, is widely regarded as one of the best games ever created and a pioneer of the FPS genre. It’s finally receiving a release on January 27 for the Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles and will be available to stream via Game Pass. Owners of digital copies of 2015’s Rare Replay will receive the title for free.
• A remaster of the game dates back to 2008, when Rare developed the title for the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) before Nintendo, Microsoft, and MGM could come to a licensing agreement. Since then, footage of the prototype followed by a ROM image of the near-complete version was leaked online in January 2021.
• The leaked XBLA version of the game included enhancements such as updated graphics and quality of life improvements, which need to be added to the new Xbox release, although a 4K resolution is available. The Switch port of the game can be played in both 4:3 and widescreen and includes online multiplayer via Nintendo Switch Online.

• Nintendo will be increasing Switch production throughout the next fiscal year in anticipation of a spike in sales stemming from the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in May 2023. The Switch held the record for the most unit sales during 2022 in the United States, beating out both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
• Japanese publication Nikkei released a report that revealed Nintendo is in talks with suppliers regarding the successor to the Switch, which could be released in 2024. There’s little information surrounding the new system, but we could potentially hear more from external sources as development continues.
