Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will revive the body weight and fitness mechanics from GTA San Andreas, last seen in the series over 20 years ago. A new Dazed magazine interview with multiple Rockstar developers reveals that both protagonists, Jason and Lucia, will visibly change based on what players eat, how much they exercise, and how well they sleep.

The details:

  • If either character eats too much, they will put on weight. Working out and exercising visibly builds muscle tone. The system goes further than the San Andreas equivalent by also tracking sleep: leave characters short on sleep, fleeing police for days or going on multi-day benders, and the effects will show up on their faces.
  • The mechanics expand on a similar but lighter system in Red Dead Redemption 2, which tracked bruises and beard growth. Rockstar co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson said the studio looks back at previous games "with a critical eye" and adjusts based on what it did not do as well as it could have.
  • The Dazed interview also revealed that NPCs will react to players visibly carrying weapons in public, and that Jason and Lucia's romantic relationship will have repercussions that "cut much deeper" than anything in previous GTA titles.
  • GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar's first official gameplay reveal aired on Netflix today, August 27.
