Following the cancellation of Xbox’s reboot of the Perfect Dark franchise back in July, internal documentation, including concept art, gameplay details, and more, has been leaked online.

The details:

  • According to MP1st, the documentation was shared by a former developer and reveals that Microsoft had taken into account the lack of new Metal Gear and 007 game releases during its development and had hoped that Perfect Dark could fill the secret agent niche. It also suggests that it would’ve had an episodic release, with The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics having been working on a vertical slice of "Season 1" until April 2025.
  • The documents refer to the game’s setting as “eco sci-fi” and include several pieces of concept art depicting in-game locations such as a futuristic Cairo, as well as alternative looks for characters such as protagonist Joanna Dark.
  • It’s said that the reboot’s creative vision was to “reimagine the franchise while retaining the core DNA from the original Nintendo 64 title.” Microsoft’s approach to the project was inspired by HBO’s TV adaptation of Westworld, which was a major success and reimagined the classic film IP.
  • MP1st also states that the documents make brief mention of some gameplay features, such as the "Relentless System" and the "Reward System," but only the "Adrenaline System" is explained in detail. Adrenaline would have been a regenerating resource that allowed players to heal, boost health, increase damage, and slow down time, with the opportunity to extend the effects by chaining kills.
