It has been announced that a new Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series is in the works, with Nier creator Yoko Taro involved as a scriptwriter.

The details:

  • As announced via the official Evangelion website as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, the Nier director will serve as a writer while Toru Yatabe (Chainsaw Man) and Kazuya Tsurumaki (Rebuild of Evangelion) will direct the project, with music composed by Keiichi Okabe (Nier: Automata). Studio Khara, founded by original series director Hideaki Anno, and Cloverworks will produce the show.
  • Little is known about the series so far, but it will follow on from the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series, its follow-up film End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series, which offered a retelling of the original show with various differences.
  • Yoko Taro has previously stated that he is a fan of the Evangelion franchise, with the series influencing his work, including Nier: Automata, which he stated is “pretty much just a retelling of Evangelion.” The anime has been heralded as one of the greatest of all time due to its unique setting that explores religious themes and mental health, coupled with high-quality animation work.
