Tencent has reportedly shut down its TiMi Montreal studio, with the developer closing its doors after five years.

The details:

  • As reported by Game File, a former TiMi Montreal programmer shared on LinkedIn that the studio had closed its doors following weeks of rumors claiming that a shutdown was "imminent.” The former employee noted that workers had been aware the closure was coming "for some time," adding that they were "genuinely heartbroken that the public will never get to experience what this team was capable of producing,” with others also sharing the news.
  • TiMi Montreal was founded in 2021 with a focus on open-world AAA games, and former Assassin's Creed creative director Ashraf Ismail joined the studio as “consulting creative director.” However, after five years, the developer did not reveal or release a single game.
  • Tencent has yet to issue a statement regarding the closure, but it’s worth noting that the Chinese tech giant also shuttered its LA-based sister studio, Team Kajiu, back in 2023. Originally opened in 2020, Team Kajiu was also working on a AAA project under the leadership of Halo and Battlefield veterans Rosi Zagorcheva and Scott Warner.
