Demon's Souls remake developer Bluepoint is shutting down, Sony confirms

Sony has announced that Bluepoint, the studio behind the critically acclaimed remakes of Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, is shutting down “following a recent business review.”

The details:

  • As reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, roughly 70 employees will lose their jobs as a result of the closure, which is set to take place next month. “Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community,” a Sony spokesperson told Bloomberg. “We thank them for their passion, creativity, and craftsmanship."
  • Founded back in 2006, Bluepoint was best known for its work creating remakes and remasters, developing the likes of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and PS5 launch title Demon’s Souls. The Austin-based studio was later acquired by Sony in 2021, where it would go on to provide co-development support on God of War Ragnarok and work on a live service God of War title that was scrapped last year.
  • PlayStation Studios’ CEO Hermen Hulst commented on the closure, stating that the decision was made due to “an increasingly challenging industry environment,” and that the company will attempt to find new roles for those affected. “Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably,” the statement reads (via ResetEra). “To navigate this reality, we need to continue adapting and evolving. We’ve taken a close look at our business to ensure we’re delivering today while still well-positioned for the future.
