Eidos Montreal lays off almost 100 employees, new Deus Ex game canceled

Eidos Montreal has announced that the studio will lay off nearly 100 employees due to Embracer Group's restructuring, resulting in the cancellation of a new Deus Ex title.

The details:

• Eidos confirmed the layoffs in a statement posted on X, affecting 97 employees from its development, administration, and support teams.

• According to the developer, the "global economic context, the challenges of our industry, and the comprehensive restructuring" of Embracer all contributed to the cuts.

• As reported by Bloomberg, a new Deus Ex game, which had been in development for two years, has also been canceled. It's unclear whether this game was the rumored co-op title that the studio was working on in May 2023, but we do know that Elias Toufexis, who played Adam Jensen in Human Revolution, wasn't involved.

• Embracer acquired Eidos and Crystal Dynamics from Square Enix in 2022, and both have been significantly impacted by the firm's ongoing restructuring program. So far, multiple studios have faced layoffs, with some, such as Free Radical, closing entirely.
