Eidos-Montreal hit with major layoffs as Embracer-owned studio undergoes internal restructuring

It has been reported that Eidos-Montreal is undergoing an internal restructuring, with the Embracer Group-owned studio reportedly canceling "most projects” and laying off staff, with more planned to come in the near future.

The details:

  • As reported by Insider Gaming, several now-former employees announced their departure from the studio on social media, with around a dozen developers seemingly affected. This is the second round of layoffs for Eidos-Montreal in 2024 alone, with 75 employees let go in March, and it’s said that the studio is planning further cuts after the upcoming releases of Grounded 2 and the reboot of Fable.
  • The restructuring has also reportedly resulted in the cancellation of “most” of the developer’s projects. Despite rumors, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has reported that several games that are said to have been cancelled as a result of the layoffs were actually canned years ago. This includes a reboot of Legacy of Kain and a narrative-driven Lord of the Rings card game.
  • In a separate report, Henderson also claims that Eidos-Montreal was working on Hideo Kojima's upcoming Xbox-backed project, OD, with approximately 20 developers assigned to the title. However, the collaboration came to an end after Kojima Productions requested that the developers relocate to Japan to work directly with the studio, effectively ending its involvement with the horror game.
