NetEase Games reportedly cuts jobs at Montreal studio

It has been reported that NetEase Games has laid off multiple employees from its Montreal-based studio, with affected staff members sharing news of their departures on LinkedIn.

The details:

  • As reported by Game Developer, several employees from the studio have posted about being impacted by the recent layoffs, which appear to have mainly targeted its quality assurance team. "Last week I was impacted by the layoffs at NetEase, and my time with them has come to an end. It was a great experience, and I'm thankful I was able to grow as I did. Now it's time to look forward and continue that growth," wrote a QA project manager on LinkedIn.
  • The extent of the layoffs remains unclear, with NetEase yet to make an official statement confirming the cuts.
  • The job cuts follow several layoffs and studio closures at NetEase and its overseas partners over the past year. The Chinese gaming giant pulled funding from multiple developers including MMO studio Fantastic Pixel Castle, and made staff reductions targeting its US-based teams despite the success of Marvel Rivals as it shifted operations back to China.
