Black Myth: Wukong surpasses two million concurrent players on Steam
Black Myth: Wukong, an action RPG from Chinese developer Game Science, has surpassed two million concurrent players on Steam, making it the most-played single-player game of all time.
The details:
The RPG was released earlier today on PC and PS5, and within a few hours, Steam Charts reported that it had over one million concurrent players, making it the fourth most-played game on the platform. The game's player base has continued to grow, with over 2,223,179 players as of writing.
The new peak has pushed it past Counter-Strike 2 and even indie release Palworld, which reached similar heights earlier this year. However, the game is still trailing PUBG: Battlegrounds, which achieved a peak of 3,257,248 players, though it has the potential to break that record as well at its current pace.
Black Myth: Wukong has been a huge success in China, with GameDiscoverCo's Simon Carless revealing that an estimated 88% of Steam players are from the country, and the game is also trending on its social media platforms. It's also worth noting that the player count for the PS5 version and the Chinese platform WeGame is currently unknown.
The game was met with controversy shortly before its release when its developer requested that influencers refrain from mentioning "feminist propaganda," politics, or the COVID-19 pandemic in any game coverage. Following reports of sexism at Game Science, CEO Féng Jì was also found to have publicly used misogynistic language in the past.
