Valve has announced that the new Steam Controller will launch on May 4, releasing ahead of the delayed Steam Machine and Steam Frame as the company works around ongoing memory shortages.

The details:

  • Valve has confirmed the Steam Controller will go on sale via the Steam Store on May 4, priced at $99 in the US, $149 in Canada and Australia, £85 in the UK, and €99 in Europe.
  • Hardware engineer Steve Cardinali stated that the company decided to ship the controller on its own, explaining that it “doesn’t have RAM in it,” with rising memory and storage costs leading to shortages for the console-like PC Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headset.
  • The new Steam Controller is the successor to the original 2015 version, adding a second thumbstick and adopting a layout closer to the Steam Deck while retaining dual trackpads aimed at making PC games playable from the sofa. While the original run of Steam Machines fell short commercially, the controller has retained a dedicated fanbase due to its intuitive control scheme compared to traditional console controllers.
