The first live-action trailer for A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black as Steve, has arrived, but early reactions are far from positive.

The details:

  • The film, which stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, is set to be released worldwide on April 4, 2025. It will be directed by Jared Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, the latter of which starred Black as the lead.

  • The trailer gives fans their first look at its take on the classic sandbox game, with its cast of characters being drawn into a strange world through a mysterious portal. To return home, they must "master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve."

  • As leaked earlier this year, the film's overworld and its mobs have been given a more realistic appearance than the game's current "modern" art style seen in official artwork in recent years. Some fans have started jokingly comparing the movie's visuals to the game's community-made texture packs and "Minecraft in real life" parody videos.

  • The overall reaction to the trailer has been negative, with many criticizing the choice to make it a live-action adaptation, Jack Black's portrayal of Steve, and even comparing the film's premise to Jumanji. So far, over 623,000 users have disliked the main trailer upload on YouTube against 425,000 likes.

  • Fortunately, fans can still look forward to Netflix and Mojang's upcoming animated series, developed by Sonic Prime studio WildBrain Studios. Not much is known about the show at this time, but Variety reports that it will include "an original story with new characters, showing the world of 'Minecraft' in a new light."
