Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, is present at Gamescom 2024 and has discussed Microsoft’s decision to release Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PlayStation 5 after its initial launch on Xbox and PC.
The details:
- The move marks another step in Xbox's new strategy of making its first-party games available on rival consoles, a tactic previously seen with games like Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush, and Rare’s Sea of Thieves. This approach aims to strengthen Xbox franchises by expanding their availability.
- During a live stream at Microsoft’s Gamescom 2024 event, Spencer highlighted the financial rationale behind the decision, noting the need to deliver substantial returns to Microsoft, especially following the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. He stated, "We run a business," emphasizing the importance of growth across Xbox’s console, PC, and cloud platforms, adding, "It’s definitely true inside of Microsoft the bar is high for us in terms of the delivery we have to give back to the company."
- Acknowledging recent challenges, including layoffs and the need for strategic adaptation, Spencer discussed the pressures facing the gaming industry., "The last thing I’ll say, as an industry right now, there’s a lot of pressure on the industry. It’s been growing for a long time and now people are looking for ways to grow." He stressed that the focus should remain on producing better games accessible to more people, indicating a shift from traditional distribution methods towards more inclusive strategies.
- Earlier, in February, Spencer stated that while four unnamed games would be making their way to PlayStation, Indy and Starfield would not be included in the deal. This stance has now changed and many hardcore Xbox fans are upset, believing it won't be long until Starfield is also available on the rival platform to the Xbox Series S/X.
