Ubisoft has confirmed that The Division Heartland, a free-to-play shooter, has been canceled three years after its initial announcement in order to focus resources on larger multiplayer titles.

The details:

  • The publisher announced the game's cancellation in a quarterly earnings call this week, stating that development has been halted and that the company will instead focus on bigger titles. “In line with the increased selectivity of our investment, we have decided to stop development on The Division Heartland and are redeploying our resources to bigger opportunities like XDefiant and Rainbow Six Siege,” said Ubisoft chief financial officer, Frédérick Duguet (via VGC).

  • The decision is part of the company's ongoing shift toward "open world adventures and native games-as-a-service titles" and larger, more profitable releases following a weak fiscal year. Staff at Red Storm Entertainment, the studio behind Heartland, will be reassigned to other projects.

  • The Division Heartland was announced in 2021 as a free-to-play console and PC release featuring PvPvE gameplay set in the rural American Midwest. Despite being scheduled to launch in 2021 or 2022, there were no updates on the project until fans noticed the Taiwanese ratings board had given the game a rating late last year, suggesting a release was imminent.
