Ubisoft quietly launches a new NFT game featuring Rayman

Ubisoft has taken yet another step into the Web3 space by developing a new game based on Netflix's Captain Laserhawk animated series, which features NFTs and the publisher's beloved mascot, Rayman.

The details:

  • As reported by Game File, Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E. was quietly released earlier this week after Ubisoft seemingly neglected to mention its existence across any of its social media or news channels. The top-down multiplayer shooter is based on Captain Laserhawk, an animated series that is a spin-off of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, which in turn is a spin-off of Far Cry 3.

  • The game heavily depends on Web3 technology, which includes cryptocurrency and blockchain functionality and requires a "Niji Warrior ID" NFT from “Eden Online” to play. The NFT pass costs $25.63 and is limited to 10,000 units worldwide. The IDs can then be sold as NFTs, but it's unclear whether there's any benefit beyond getting your money back.

  • As for its gameplay, Game File's Stephen Totilo described it as the "most basic top-down shooter imaginable." Players are dropped into an arena, and the goal is to kill as many opponents as possible by moving, shooting, and stunning them. The game also includes gear customization, a battle pass, and a leaderboard that consisted of approximately 100 players at the time of the report.

  • Ubisoft's beloved mascot Rayman appears as the game's announcer, as well as a "legendary" profile picture limited to 425 units and priced at 7,500 coins. Given that fans have been requesting the Rayman franchise's return for over a decade, the inclusion of the character in a Web3 game can be seen as a tad disrespectful.

  • Ubisoft’s Web3 plans have been received poorly over the past few years. In 2021, it announced its own AAA NFT platform, Quartz, which was scrapped after it sold just 15 NFTs in its first month. Despite this, the publisher went on to launch its first NFT title, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, back in October, which was temporarily unplayable due to a single player using an exploit to automatically beat opponents.
