Former Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan has announced his next project, The Legend of California, a multiplayer action-survival first-person shooter set on a mythical island during the Gold Rush era.

The details:

  • The Legend of California is the first release from Kaplan’s new studio, Kintsugiyama, and is being published by Dreamhaven, the company founded by former Blizzard president Mike Morhaime. There is currently no set release date, but the studio plans to release the title in early access on PC via Steam, with community beta tests shaping the eventual 1.0 launch.
  • According to the game’s official website and Steam page, players will explore a large open world, gathering resources, crafting gear, hunting wildlife, and building up their own ranches. Players will also be able to fight each other solo or in four-player groups, with the title featuring persistent online servers.
  • Despite the game including survival and crafting systems, Kintsugiyama has stated that it plans not to “starve” players in the early game, allowing them to access the “cool stuff” faster. The title is also being envisioned as an open-world multiplayer shooter rather than a hardcore survival game, where players can choose how to engage with its mechanics.
