Ubisoft launches its first Web3 game featuring NFTs costing up to $64,000
Ubisoft has quietly launched Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, a "Web3 competitive Turn-Based RPG," allowing players to purchase in-game characters with an in-game currency or cryptocurrency at prices as high as $64,000 USD.
The details:
The game, which was announced last year, debuted on PC last week. Players control a team of three characters, and while Champions Tactics is free to play, the characters, known as "Champions," can be purchased with real-world currency or in-game gold. The characters on its official marketplace are priced as low as $6 but can reach into the tens of thousands, with "Swift Zealot" costing a whopping $63,863.30.
The game's Web3 integration is unavoidable, as even if players intend to use in-game currency exclusively, they must link a cryptocurrency wallet to play. While Ubisoft is likely to deny the suggestion, it appears that those who purchase the expensive Champions are likely to have greater success in battles, creating a pay-to-win structure similar to other heavily monetized games.
This is not Ubisoft's first foray into NFTs as it previously revealed the short-lived Quartz platform in late 2021. The service would allow players to earn and trade digital rewards earned while playing games, and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint was used to trial the platform's functionality. Unsurprisingly, gamers were not fans of the idea, and Ubisoft shut down Quartz after only 15 NFTs were reportedly sold. Company executive Nicolas Pouard later claimed that players simply "don't get it."
