As of November 2024, sales of the Nintendo Switch have surpassed those of the PlayStation 2, making it the second best-selling console of all time in the United States.

The details:

  • As reported by Circana executive director and analyst Mat Piscatella, the Switch has now sold 46.6 million units in the US alone, surpassing the PS2's 46.5 million sales. This makes the console the best-selling home console in the country and the second best-selling overall, trailing only the DS, which sold 53.8 million units.

  • However, the PS2 continues to reign supreme in terms of global sales, having sold 160 million units worldwide. This is followed by the DS at 154.02 million and the Switch at 146.04 million.

  • According to Circana data, Switch sales have declined by 3% when compared to November 2023, but the platform remains the second best-selling for the month in terms of units and dollars, trailing only the PS5 and surpassing Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S.

  • The impressive feat comes despite the console's continuously declining sales since its launch in 2017. It’s likely that the system's popularity has declined due to its age, and the fact that Nintendo has confirmed that a successor will be revealed by the end of March 2025.

  • Nintendo has also announced that the "Switch 2" will be compatible with the Switch's software, implying that some of the games released during its launch period may be available on both platforms, similar to the Wii U and Switch. This could help push more units if the console's average price declines.
