Epic Games has announced that Fortnite’s Save the World mode, the original focus of the game prior to the launch of its now-popular battle royale mode, will finally become free-to-play after almost a decade.

The details:

  • Epic has confirmed that from April 16, all players will be able to access the game mode free of charge on all major platforms aside from mobile and Switch. Currently, Save the World is unavailable on Switch 2, but once it becomes free to the public, it will be officially supported on the hybrid console.
  • Fans can now confirm their interest in the mode via a new website, with each registration contributing to a community goal. The goal features three milestones for 300,000, 700,000, and 1,000,000 registrations, respectively, offering different free rewards. Epic notes that the final milestone reward, the Snowstrike Hero, is specific to Save the World.
  • Save the World was the original PvE mode of Fortnite and sees players building defenses and fighting against waves of zombies. However, after the game’s battle royale mode exploded in popularity, the PvE mode has received little attention, remaining behind a paywall ever since.
