Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's commercial failure leads to 41% decline in WB Games revenue
Warner Bros. Discovery has reported a significant drop in gaming revenue as a result of the poor performance of Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
The details:
In its latest quarterly earnings report, the company confirmed that its gaming division had experienced a 41% decrease in revenue year on year, with Suicide Squad's "weak performance" playing a significant role. Although exact sales figures have yet to be officially revealed, Warner Bros. previously stated that the project had "fallen short" of expectations shortly after its launch earlier this year, resulting in a $200 million loss.
However, another reason for the large drop in revenue is the release of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, which sold over 24 million copies across all platforms by the beginning of 2024. Given that it was also the best-selling game of 2023, it was unlikely that another title from WB Games could match its huge success.
Suicide Squad was panned by both critics and fans before it even launched, with a poorly received gameplay reveal at PlayStation's State of Play, followed by delays that pushed it back almost a year. When it finally arrived, players were met with an always-online requirement, server issues, repetitive gameplay, and unwanted live-service elements.
