Due to budget constraints, Meta has reportedly shut down Ready At Dawn, a first-party studio under Oculus, after two decades of operation.

The details:

  • As reported by Android Central, the developer has closed with immediate effect. A Meta spokesperson stated that the decision was made to ensure that the company's Reality Labs division "stays within [its] new budgetary constraints and that Oculus Studios can make a 'better long-term impact' in VR development."

  • The number of employees affected by the closure is currently unknown, but Meta told Android Central that the move was not large enough to trigger the California WARN Act, which requires employees to be notified if more than 50 employees are laid off at the same time.

  • Founded in 2003, the developer first worked on Daxter and God of War for the PSP before releasing The Order: 1886 for the PS4 in 2015. Since then, it has shifted to VR, creating the impressive Lone Echo franchise, with Meta acquiring the studio in 2020.

  • The studio underwent layoffs last year, affecting a third of its workforce, with similar cuts being made at Downpour Interactive. Meta's Reality Labs division has continued to lose billions of dollars annually, with losses totaling $4.5 billion in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.
