Legendary game designer Shinji Mikami has officially launched his new independent game studio, Unbound, which is currently developing an original AAA title for consoles and PC.

The details:

  • Despite the company's website only surfacing recently, Unbound has been operational since May 2023, with Mikami serving as the representative director. According to its website, the studio is described as a “fully independent company, developing high-end consumer games, creating original AAA titles."
  • The studio currently employs around 50 people but plans to later expand to approximately 150 employees. Notably, current members of the team have worked on several of Mikami’s projects in the past, including Hi-Fi Rush and Resident Evil, as well as other major releases such as Silent Hill, Devil May Cry, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Shadow of the Colossus.
  • According to job listings found on the company’s career page, Unbound is developing a high-end original IP project powered by Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC. The developer also aims to work on several smaller projects alongside its major releases in the future, with veteran producer and longtime Mikami collaborator Masato Kimura describing the game as featuring "AAA quality and AA content.”
