Star Wars Battlefront 2 has surpassed its previous all-time player count on Steam after nearly five years, as fans promote the FPS title on social media.

The details:

  • According to SteamDB, Battlefront 2 reached a peak concurrent player count of 18,635 on Monday, breaking the previous record of 10,489 set in January 2021. However, it's worth noting that the game didn't arrive on Steam until 2020, more than three years after its original release on EA's Origin platform. This means that its overall all-time peak on PC could be higher as EA has not released player numbers publicly.

  • The sudden resurgence of the FPS comes after the recent conclusion of the Star Wars TV series Andor. This was followed by a number of viral posts on X, which helped to put the game back in the spotlight by showing off its impressive visuals and cinematic battles. It has also become one of the top 30 best-selling titles on Steam this week, indicating that a sizable portion of its current player base consists of newcomers.

  • Originally released in 2017, DICEโ€™s Battlefront 2 was met with backlash at launch and is remembered by many for its infamous microtransaction systems. While it was possible to earn upgrades and unlock powerful heroes by playing, progression was extremely slow, meaning that players either had to play for 50 hours to unlock a single character or simply buy them with real-world money. The game later received updates changing progression, leading to it being remembered fondly by the time EA stopped providing support in 2020.
