Rockstar Games has reportedly asked those working on Grand Theft Auto VI to return to its physical offices as the game approaches its final year of full development.

The details:

  • As reported by Bloomberg, Jenn Kolbe, the studio's head of publishing, explained in an email that the decision to end hybrid working was made for productivity and security reasons, and that there are "tangible benefits" to working in person. “Making these changes now puts us in the best position to deliver the next Grand Theft Auto at the level of quality and polish we know it requires, along with a publishing roadmap that matches the scale and ambition of the game,” Kolbe wrote.

  • Rockstar was the target of a notorious hack in 2022, which resulted in gameplay from an in-development build of GTA VI being leaked online more than a year before the game's official announcement. The reveal trailer for the game was also leaked a day before its scheduled release, prompting the developer to release it earlier than planned.

  • According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, employees are dissatisfied with the overall decision, which goes into effect in April. Similar situations have occurred at other companies over the last year, including Activision Blizzard and Roblox, resulting in job losses for those who refused to abandon remote and hybrid working options.
