Nintendo has confirmed that it will continue to support the original Switch throughout the Switch 2's life cycle as long as demand exists, but the company has also revealed that software and hardware sales are still declining.

The details:

  • As reported by Sankei, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated during a recent earnings call that he does not believe the Switch 2 has impacted the sales of its predecessor. The president went on to say that, despite declining sales in recent years, the company will continue to support the Switch as long as there is enough demand to justify it.

  • Nintendo has confirmed that Switch console sales have dropped by more than 30% year on year, with software down 24%. Despite the significant drop in sales, the company points out that the previous fiscal year saw the release of high-profile titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which boosted revenue. It's also worth noting that the Switch is approaching its eighth anniversary, and with the Switch 2 on the way, it's not too surprising that sales are declining.

  • Despite the fact that the Switch 2 will be released later this year after its announcement last month, the original Switch sold an impressive 4.82 million units worldwide during the holiday season.

  • As the Switch 2 is backwards compatible, it's possible that Switch software sales will increase after its release as players discover older titles during its launch period. New console launches are typically a dry spell for games other than major hits like Mario Kart, and with Xbox reportedly planning to update its releases to make use of the Switch 2's more powerful hardware, other developers may do the same.
