PlayStation acquires Firewalk Studios

PlayStation has announced that it is acquiring Firewalk Studios as it continues to work on developing its first-ever title in a new IP.

The details:

PlayStation announced the acquisition of Firewalk Studios from publisher ProbablyMonsters in a new press release. The move is part of Sony's ongoing push into live-service titles, which the company hopes to release 12 titles by 2025. It is now the gaming company's 20th first-party studio. PlayStation and Firewalk first announced a publishing partnership in 2021, but it appears that the gaming giant has opted to take the extra step ahead of the game’s reveal.
As its first project since its inception in 2018, Firewalk is currently developing a new AAA multiplayer title. The game's director is Ryan Ellis, a former Creative Director on Destiny, and the executive producer is Elena Siegman, who has worked on both Destiny and Guitar Hero II as a producer and lead producer. Details on the project are currently unknown, although we could possibly hear more about it shortly.
According to PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, the company was "impressed by the team's ambitions to build a modern multiplayer game that connects players in new and innovative ways," prompting the company to go all in and bring it under its umbrella. Firewalk's studio head and game director, Tony Hsu and Ryan Ellis, said in a statement that the company had "worked closely with Hermen and the very talented team at PlayStation for years, helping to make our new game even better," and that they were "honored" to join.

Sony is said to be developing a new portable handheld that will be released before the PS5 Pro. The handheld will use the PS5's remote play feature rather than cloud streaming and will have an 8-inch, 1080p, 60FPS touch screen with a layout similar to the current DualSense controller.
A PlayStation showcase is rumored to take place before Summer Game Fest on June 8th. Sony is expected to reveal some of its biggest games as well as future hardware such as the new base PS5 model and upcoming earbuds.
