New Final Fantasy I-VI remasters coming to PS4 and Switch in Spring 2023

The original six mainline games of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise are getting a fresh coat of paint for the series’ 35th anniversary in 2023.

The details:

• Square Enix has announced a collection of remastered Final Fantasy games in a news post on its official website. The games will be released in spring 2023 on both the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch, with no specific release date provided.
• The standard edition collection will be available digitally as a bundle or as individual entries, and a limited run of physical copies will be up for grabs on the Square Enix store. The price for the entire collection comes in at $74.99.
• A physical anniversary edition is also available, which includes a two-disc vinyl record set with newly arranged music, a pixel art artbook, eight pixel art figures, a lenticular sleeve, and the game on either platform. Priced at $249.99, this one is definitely for the diehard Final Fantasy fans.
• The games feature gameplay and UI improvements, rearranged soundtracks, updated graphics, and other extras. According to Square Enix's news post, the remasters differ from previous releases in that some previously added features may be removed or altered.

What’s going on with Final Fantasy?

• Square Enix is currently working on Final Fantasy XVI, which is scheduled to be released on June 22, 2023. The game will be set in a fantasy world with action-based combat, combining classic and new Final Fantasy styles. The game will be a timed exclusive on PlayStation 5 for six months, with PC and Xbox releases likely in 2024.
• The remake of the PSP entry Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII was released on December 13, 2022, to a good reception from both critics and fans. As a prequel to Final Fantasy VII, it could be a good pick-up for those waiting for the next part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake.
• Final Fantasy VII Remake is receiving its second part in late 2023 or early 2024 on PS5. The game will be titled Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and is a direct continuation of the first game. Interestingly, creative director Tetsuya Nomura claimed that the game was being designed so those who haven’t played the first part or the original PS1 game can still enjoy it. It’s unknown what these design decisions are, but we imagine they won’t be drastic enough to alter the story.
